Men's Basketball Falls to Dayton, 71-58, in Intrastate Showdown
Feb. 11, 2009
DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Derrick Brown scored 12 points in the second half, but the Xavier University men's basketball team couldn't overcome the balanced attack of the University of Dayton in a 71-58 loss on Wednesday. Eleven Flyers scored as the Musketeers were dealt their second consecutive Atlantic 10 loss to fall to 20-4 on the season and 8-2 in the conference.
Brown led XU with 17 points, hitting eight of his 12 shots from the field. After scoring 10 points in the first half, senior B.J. Raymond finished with 12 points. Junior Jason Love tied for the game high with six rebounds, adding nine points on 4-for-8 shooting.
One of 10 ten UD players to see more than 10 minutes of action, Chris Wright led the Flyers with 19 points. Marcus Johnson added 13 for UD, which improved to 22-3 on the season and 8-2 in A-10 play.
Hot shooting to begin the second half helped the Flyers build their largest lead of the game, with a three-pointer by UD's Paul Williams giving the home team a 52-41 advantage with 12:23 to play. The Flyers began the second half by hitting 8-for-12 from the field.
The lead remained near 10 until Johnson sparked a 7-0 Flyers rally with five consecutive points to push the home team's advantage to 64-50, its largest lead of the game. The margin never dipped below double digits from that point forward.
UD held a 33-28 lead at half time, thanks in part to a 9-2 advantage in free throws made. The Musketeers, who came into the game averaging over 27.5 free throw attempts per contest, had only four tries from the charity stripe in the first half.
With no player taking more than five shots from the field, nine Flyers got into the scoring column in the first half. Devin Searcy led the home team with nine points as one of only two players to reach double figures in minutes played for UD in the first 20 minutes.
Raymond carried the Musketeers in the first 20 minutes, scoring 10 first half points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field. Freshman Kenny Frease added four points for XU in the first stanza, making two of his three attempts in the post.
XU will return to its home floor this weekend to take on Fordham in a Valentine's Day matchup. The game, which starts at 4 p.m., will be aired regionally on CBS College Sports and locally on Fox Sports Ohio.
