DAYTON, Ohio - Despite 24 points from sophomore guard Jordan Crawford the Xavier Musketeers were unable to overcome a determined Dayton squad and fell 90-65 in front of a raucous, sold-out, University of Dayton Arena. With the loss, the Musketeers had their four-game winning streak snapped.
The Flyers protected their home court as they held the lead for the entire game. Rebounds proved crucial as the Flyers out-rebounded the Musketeers 42-24 and out-scored XU in the paint 40-22.
Sophomore guard Terrell Holloway was the only other Musketeer, besides Crawford, who scored in double-figures. Holloway finished the game with 12 points on 3-of-8 shooting and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
With the loss the Musketeers fell to 16-7 overall and 8-2 in the Atlantic 10. Dayton improved to 16-6 overall and 5-3 in the A-10.
Xavier trailed the Flyers 39-26 at halftime. Crawford led the Musketeers in scoring with 13 first half points on 3-of-5 from the field. Wright led the way for UD with 10 first half points on 3-of-7 from the field. UD came out swinging in the first half. The Flyers capitalized on early Musketeer mistakes to take a 12-3 lead into the first media timeout at the 15:05 mark.
Foul trouble struck Xavier early in the game. Jason Love was sidelined with two fouls at the 18:56 mark and Kenny Frease was benched with two fouls with 16:37 left in the first frame. The second half was all UD. XU managed to cut the Flyer lead to just 10 twice in the second half but were unable to make any more headway.
Xavier will return to action Saturday, February 13 as they travel to face Florida in Gainesville in non-conference action. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
