PHILADELPHIA - Xavier dropped its third-straight game, falling 81-58 at No. 6 Villanova on Monday evening. XU's record slid to 15-7 (5-4 BIG EAST) with the loss and VU improved to 20-2 (8-1 BIG EAST).
Three Muskesteers reached double-digits in the game, led by Semaj Christon's 17 points. Matt Stainbrook recorded his sixth double-double of the season, hauling in 11 rebounds to go with 14 points. Justin Martin also reached double-figures with 13 points, all coming in the second half.
The Musketeers trailed by nine shortly after haltime and used consecutive threes from Martin to pull with three, 31-28, with just under 18 minutes remaining in the contest. Villanova answered with a 15-4 run to take control of the game, 51-36, with 12 minutes left before closing out the game, 81-58.
Xavier finished the game 20-of-53 (38 percent) from the floor, including 7-of-18 (39 percent) from long range. Villanova knocked down 32-of-65 (49 percent) of its attempts and 11-of-28 (39 percent) from three.
After falling behind by as many as 11 points, Xavier kept chipping away and whittled its halftime deficit to just six, 28-22. Christon led the Musketeers with 10 points in the frame, but XU was plagued by 11 turnovers that led to nine points for VU. By comparison, the Wildcats only turned the ball over four times that led to two Musketeer points.
The Wildcats were led by James Bell's 27 points and eight boards. JayVaughn Pinkston added 11 points and another eight rebounds, while Darrun Hilliard tacked on 17 points.
Xavier plays host to Providence on Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest at Cintas Center that will air on FOX Sports 1. The Friars defeated the Musketeers, 81-72, just two weeks ago in Providence, R.I.
