CINCINNATI - The Xavier Musketeers fell to the Seton Hall Pirates, 68-60, Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center. Junior center Matt Stainbrook recorded his fifth double-double of the season in the game. The Musketeers are now 15-6 on the year and 5-3 in BIG EAST play. The Pirates improve to 13-9 overall (4-5 BIG EAST).
Stainbrook and sophomore guard Semaj Christon led the Musketeers in the effort. Stainbrook finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and three assists. Christon scored a game-high 21 points and also had six assists and three rebounds. Christon has scored in double digits nine games in a row and has also scored over 20 points in five of the last seven games.
Seton Hall jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead but Xavier responded by scoring five straight to cut the Pirates' lead to three. Brandon Mobley gave Seton Hall its largest lead of nine from back-to-back three pointers. After that, Xavier's defense held the Pirates to 3-of-12 for the rest of the half. The Musketeers went on an 8-0 run starting with a Myles Davis three following with several foul shots due a technical on the Seton Hall bench. With 30 seconds left in the half, an over-the-back call sent Matt Stainbrook to the line to give the Musketeers a 28-27 halftime lead. Seton Hall's 27 first half points are the lowest allowed in the first half by the Xavier defense since Wake Forest scored 27 in December.
Fuquan Edwin nailed two threes to give Seton Hall a 37-31 lead with 17:37 remaining. Xavier jumped to a 6-0 run to tie the game after back-to-back finishes by Christon. Later in the half, Isaiah Philmore scored five straight points to give the Musketeers a 46-45 lead with 10:22 to go. Seton Hall hit five treys in the second half, including two from Jaren Sina that extended the Pirates' lead to nine, their largest of the afternoon. Xavier managed to cut the lead to five points, but Seton Hall was able to hold on for the 68-60 final.
Other contributors for the Musketeers were Philmore, Dee Davis and Myles Davis. Philmore added eight points and two boards, while D. Davis had three points and five assists. Myles Davis hit two three-pointers and finished with 7 points.
Xavier's final stat line included a 44.7 (21-of-47) field goal percentage. The team won the rebounding battle, 33-28. XU dished out 15 assists on their 21 made shots and scored 34 points in the paint.
Overall, the Pirates also shot a 44.7 field goal percentage (21-of-47). They hit 8-of-22 three-pointers (36.4 percent) and also made 18-of-22 from the charity stripe (81.8 percent). Seton Hall scored 21 points off Xavier's 13 turnovers.
Four Pirates scored in double figures in their win. The team's leading scorer, Fuquan Edwin, scored 18 points and also had six boards with three assists.
The Musketeers will head back on the road to face the Villanova Wildcats in Philadelphia, Pa. on Monday, Feb. 3 for a 7:00 pm game. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
