WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Thanks to a stellar 21-point performance by senior guard Tu Holloway, the Xavier men's basketball team escaped the Charles E. Smith Center with a 59-58 win over George Washington Wednesday night. With the win, XU improved to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in the Atlantic 10. GW fell to 8-14 overall and 3-5 in the A-10 with the loss. Holloway moved to No. 6 all-time in assists at XU with 498 career dishes and junior Mark Lyons scored his 1,000th career point in the contest.

Holloway's 21 points came on 7-of-14 from the field. He also posted seven assists on the night. Senior Kenny Frease was second in scoring for XU with 10 points on 4-of-8. Freshman Dezmine Wells led XU with seven rebounds.

Tony Taylor led the Colonials with 20 points while Nemaja Mikic added 19.

Holloway's assist No. 496 came with 12:02 left in the game when he found Lyons under the basket for a layup and free throw that cut the GW lead to 44-42.

Holloway struck again with a pull-up trey at the 9:41 mark that cut the GW lead to 47-45. Frease gave XU the 48-47 lead on the next possession with a layup and a free throw from a Holloway pass that gave him sole possession of sixth place on the all-time XU assist list.

GW reclaimed the lead but with 1:14 left in the game, Holloway hit a layup to put the score at 58-57 in favor of the Colonials. He gave XU a one-point (59-58) lead with 23 seconds left in the contest with a pull-up jumper from just inside the free-throw line.

XU held on for the win thanks to a big rebound by Frease in the final moments of the game.

Lyons wasted no time in getting his 1,000th career point as he hit a layup at the 18:54 mark in the first half to cross the 1,000-point threshold. He finished the night with nine points giving him 1,007 points for his career and is the 49th Musketeer to reach the milestone. 



Holloway led the Musketeers in scoring in the first half with nine points on 3-of-5 shooting including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Mickic led GW and all scorers with 13 points in the first half on 5-of-9 from the field.

The Colonials got off to a hot start as they outscored XU 16-9 through the first eight minutes of the game. Lyons and Holloway scored all nine of the Musketeers' points during the first eight minutes.

The Musketeers managed to cut into the GW lead with two 3-pointers from junior Brad Redford that cut the score to 21-17 with 7:50 left in the first frame.

XU took its first lead of the game at the 6:50 mark in the first half when Holloway hit a fast-break 3-pointer that gave the Musketeers a 22-21 edge.

Xavier will conclude its three-game road swing Saturday as the Musketeers face the Memphis Tigers in the final non-conference game of the regular season. Tip time is set for 1 p.m. at FedExForum.
