CINCINNATI - Sophomore guard Stanley Burrell led three Musketeers in double-figures with 16 points but Xavier struggled from the field in the second half and dropped a 59-54 decision to Saint Louis on Sunday evening at Cintas Center. With the loss, XU slips to 12-3 on the season and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The Billikens, who kept their string of alternating wins and losses alive, improve to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in the loop.
12 of Burrell's 16 points came in the first half as he went 0-for-7 from the field in the second half. Brian Thornton and Josh Duncan joined Burrell in double-figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. Duncan also snared a game-high six rebounds.
Xavier led by as many as eight points in the second half and led by six, 45-39, after Duncan nailed a 3-pointer with 12:30 remaining in the second half. Xavier would go ice-cold for the remainder of the game though, failing to hit a field goal the rest of the way.
SLU would take advantage and built a five point lead, 52-47 at the six-minute mark, on the strength of a 13-2 run.
Burrell pulled XU to within two points, 54-52, when he converted on a pair of free throws at the 1:30 mark. On the ensuing possession, Xavier clamped down on defense but Kevin Lisch drilled a clutch 3-pointer at the top of the key with the shot clock winding down to put the Billikens back up by five.
Xavier would get no closer than three points the rest of the way as SLU hit its free throws down the stretch to stay out of reach.
Xavier turned the ball over only 11 times and forced Saint Louis into 20 miscues. The Musketeers shot a season-low 32 percent from the field and allowed the Billikens to shoot 47.7 percent from the field including a blistering 52.2 percent clip in the second half.
Saint Louis also won the battle of the boards by a 30-to-28 margin.
Ian Vouyoukas led the way for Saint Louis with 13 points and five rebounds.
The first half was evenly matched and featured two ties and eight lead changes. XU trailed by as many as three points but took a 19-18 lead at 7:20 when Thornton converted on a lay-up.
The Musketeers charged out to a 9-2 run later in the half and seized a 30-22 advantage when Will Caudle completed and acrobatic 3-point play with only 2:30 left in the half.
Saint Louis would score the final four points of the stanza and pulled to within four points, 30-26, at the half.
Xavier will return to action on Wednesday, January 25 when the team travels to Philadelphia to take on Temple. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Liacouras Center.
