Xavier Outlasts Bearcats in Overtime, 73-71

CINCINNATI - Senior forward Brian Thornton and sophomore guard Stanley Burrell each scored 20 points to lead the Xavier men's basketball team to a 73-71 overtime win over Cincinnati in the annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,250 at XU's Cintas Center. With the win, the Musketeers move to 12-2 on the season while the Bearcats fall to 13-5.

For just the fifth time in the history of the UC-XU rivalry, the teams had to go to overtime to decide a winner. The Musketeers are now 4-1 in overtime contests versus the Bearcats.

Thornton began the overtime period with an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Musketeers a 67-64 edge with 4:27 to go in the extra period. Justin Doellman and Burrell each connected from the field to give the Musketeers a 71-66 advantage at 1:21. Consecutive made field goals from UC's Devan Downey and Cedric McGowan tied the game at 71-71. Doellman converted on a couple free throws down the stretch to secure the win for the Musketeers.

With the score tied at 58-58 in regulation, senior forward Brian Thornton grabbed the offensive rebound and converted in traffic to give XU a 60-58 advantage with 1:51 remaining in regulation. The Musketeers appeared to have the game in hand until a made 3-pointer from the right wing from Jihad Muhammad forced overtime.

 

 

After trailing 37-30 at the half, Xavier opened the second stanza with a 12-to-5 run over the first five minutes of the second half, which was capped by a fast-break lay-up from Dedrick Finn at the 15:00 minute mark to the game at 42-42.

Thornton recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 20 points on 7-of-9 from the floor to go with 12 rebounds. Burrell's 20 points came on 9-of-15 from the floor. Doellman provided a huge defensive effort with 5 blocked shots and tied a career high with 13 rebounds to go with seven points.

Xavier was 28-of-68 (.412) from the field for the game and shot a season-low 5.6 percent from 3-point territory (1-of-18). The Bearcats countered with 28-of-75 (.373) from the field and 10-of-24 (.417) from beyond the arc.

The Musketeers won the battle of the boards 56-to-41 including a 37-to-26 advantage on the defensive glass. XU converted on 16-of-28 (.571) from the charity stripe while Cincinnati made good on 5-of-11 (.455) from the stripe.

Freshman guard Devan Downey led the way for the Bearcats with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-18 from the field including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Senior Brian Hicks was huge for UC as the 6-6 forward scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and recorded seven blocks. Joining Downey and Hicks in double-figures were James White (16), Cedric McGowan (11) and Jihad Muhammad (10).

The Musketeers will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 22, when Xavier plays host to Saint Louis. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from Cintas Center.
