Game Notes

The Xavier Musketeers (11-5, 3-0 A-10) defeated the Dayton Flyers (14-5, 2-2), 81-76, to claim its 10th win in the last 12 meetings between the two teams. Blackburn/McCafferty Game MVP Award-winner Tu Holloway paced the Musketeers with 24 points, 5 rebounds, and a game-high 6 assists. Kenny Frease scored 20 points and Jamel McLean added 15. Mark Lyons grabbed 6 rebounds. Dayton was led by Juwan Staten who scored 17 points, Chris Johnson added 16, and Chris Wright and Paul Williams each had 10 points. Wright grabbed 10 rebounds and had 5 assists to pace the Flyers in those categories.

Xavier, which is in its 11th season at Cintas Center, is now 143-18 (.888) all-time at its on-campus arena. The Musketeers are 72-10 (.878) against Atlantic 10 competition since Cintas Center opened.

Xavier has won 34 straight home games against Atlantic 10 Conference competition, tying the all-time A-10 record. Against Atlantic 10 competition, XU is 2-0 this season and was 8-0 at home during the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 seasons. XU's last loss at home came to Saint Joseph's, 69-58, in the 2005-06 season finale (2-26-06). Temple also had 34 consecutive A-10 home wins (12-10-87 through 2-19-91). Xavier's next home game is versus Temple, Saturday, January 22.

Xavier committed a season-low 5 turnovers, eclipsing the season-best 7 turnovers against UMass (1-12-11).

Xavier converted 25 of it 29 free throw (.862) attempts, it second-best performance from the line this season. Xavier was 20-for-23 (.870) at Miami (12-1-10).

Dayton shot 50.9 percent (27-for-53) from the field, which was the best shooting game by a Xavier opponent this season. The previous high was 46.6 percent (34-for-73) by Wofford (11-27-10).

Tu Holloway scored a game-high 24 points to earn the Blackburn/McCafferty Game MVP Award. Holloway was 7-of-12 from the field and 8-for-8 from the free throw line with 5 rebounds and 6 assists. For the season he is averaging 20.3 ppg. and 5.4 apg. this season.

Andrew Taylor matched his career high with 6 points. He also scored 6 twice before, most recently against Charlotte (1-13-10).

Mark Lyons matched his career high with 6 rebounds. He had 6 three other times, most recently against Richmond (2-28-10).

Dayton's Juwan Staten scored a career-high 17 points. His previous high was against George Mason (12-19-10).

Dayton's Chris Wright matched his career high with 5 assists. He also had 5 assists against Ole Miss (3-30-10).


Trailing 9-4 at 15:26, Dayton went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-9 lead at 13:41. Josh Parker scored 5 points.

Trailing 34-31 at 19:39 of the second half, XU went on an 11-2 run to take a 42-36 lead at 16:58. Jamel McLean had four points on a pair of fast break dunks and Tu Holloway was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Trailing 51-48 at 12:00, XU went on an 8-0 run to take a 56-51 lead at 9:11. Kenny Frease and Jamel McLean each had four points.

Up Next: Xavier travels to St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, January 19, for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Bonnies. XU leads the all-time series with Saint Bonaventure, 22-15, including the last nine straight meetings. Last year, XU Jordan Crawford scored 22 points to lead five Musketeers in double figures as XU routed the Bonnies, 93-72, at Cintas Center (3-6-10) in the regular season finale. Jamel McLean scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while his inside counterpart Jason Love scored 14 points and also grabbed nine boards. Saint Bonaventure's last win in the series came on February 9, 2002, when the Bonnies nipped the Musketeers in Olean, New York, 80-79.
