Men's Hoops Fends Off Charlotte, 86-74

CINCINNATI - Sophomore guard Jordan Crawford led a balanced scoring attack as the Xavier University men's basketball team held off Charlotte, 86-74, on Wednesday evening at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 11-5 on the season, including a spotless 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play. Charlotte slips to 11-5, 1-1.
Crawford scored 18 points and led five Musketeers in double-digits. His 18 came on 6-of-15 shooting and he also snared six rebounds and dished-out four assists. Junior guard Dante Jackson was feeling it on Wednesday, connecting on four of his seven attempts from long-range. He also posted six assists but fouled out and saw only 21 minutes of action.
Sophomore sharp shooter Brad Redford connected on four of his six attempts from deep and also tied his career high by chasing down four rebounds. Senior center Jason Love was the fourth Musketeer in double-figures with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Xavier led 44-28 at the break and extended that lead to as many as 21 points in the second half. However, Charlotte would not totally go away and cut the XU lead to 10 points on three separate occasions in the second half. That was as close as the Niners would get though as XU was able to keep the them at arm's length.
Xavier held Charlotte to an infinitesimal 9.1 percent (2-of-22) from long range but were out-rebounded 35-to-29 by the Niners. XU did hold a 23-to-19 edge on the defensive glass and out-scored Charlotte 17-to-6 on the fast break.
The Musketeers trailed 5-4 in the early stages of the first half but dominated the next three-minutes and jumped out to a 13-2 run to seize a 17-7 lead they would not relinquish.
XU kept the pedal to the metal for the remainder of the first stanza and extended the lead to 16 points, 44-28, at the half.
XU had the clamps down on the 49ers in the first half, holding Charlotte to just 33.3 percent shooting, including 10 percent from long-range. Charlotte also made just seven of its 15 free throw attempts.
18 of Xavier's 26 buckets came via the assist.
An'Juan Wildnerness led the way for Charlotte with 15 points.
The Musketeers are back in action on Saturday, January 16 when the team takes on Dayton. Game time is set for 11 a.m. at Cintas Center and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
