OMAHA, Neb. - Xavier cut a 14-point deficit to just three in the waning seconds, but was unable to complete the rally in a 95-89 loss at Creighton in the Musketeers' first BIG EAST road game in the BIG EAST. The loss snapped XU's eight-game win-streak, bringing the Musketeers' record to 13-4 and 3-1 in the BIG EAST. Creighton improved to 13-2 overall (4-0 BIG EAST).
A Creighton three-pointer with 8:45 remaining in the game extended the Bluejays lead to 14, but Xavier refused to fold and scored the next eight points to trim the lead to six, 71-65. CU answered and pushed the lead to 12, 85-73, with just two minutes to play.
Once again, XU responded by putting together a 13-4 run over the next 90 seconds. Stainbrook connected on a layup to start the rally. Dee Davis connected on a three, Semaj Christon converted a Landen Amos steal into a layup, Justin Martin found the bottom of the net with a trey and Davis converted his second trifecta of the run.
Creighton stemmed the tide and pushed its lead back to seven, 93-86, with four consecutive free throws. Martin answered with another three, but the Bluejays' Austin Chatman sealed the game with two more free throws with seven seconds remaining.
The game featured two of the best players in the conference, Xavier's Christon and BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Doug McDermott. The two players didn't disappoint. After scoring 28 points against Marquette on Thursday, Christon poured in another 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. McDermott, a two-time All-American, finished with 35 points (13-of-24).
Nine players reached double-figures in the high scoring affair. In addition to Christon's 27, Martin went 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-10 from three-point territory in his 21-point effort. Matt Stainbrook added 15 points and Davis closed with 14.
Ethan Wragge (15), Devin Brooks (14), Austin Chatman (12) and Jahenns Manigat (11) joined McDermott in double-digits for the Bluejays.
Xavier jumped out to a 12-0 lead to start the game, connecting on 4-of-5 from three to force a Creighton timeout just 2:11 into the game. Creighton responded with an 18-4 run and closed the half with a 39-35 lead. Martin and Davis led XU with nine points in the frame, while Doug McDermott
The Musketeers connected on 43.3 percent (13-for-30) of their shots in the half, including 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from long-range. The Bluejays knocked down 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the field and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from three.
Georgetown will head to Cincinnati for a meeting with Xavier on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
