CINCINNATI -- The Xavier men's basketball team's recent win streak over crosstown rival Cincinnati ended Thursday night as the Bearcats defeated the Musketeers 66-46 in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout.

UC (15-0, 2-0 Big East) earned its first win over the Musketeers since the 2006-2007 season. Xavier (8-5, 0-0 Atlantic 10) dropped its second straight contest.

Xavier senior forward Jamel McLean had a strong game with 18 points on 6-of-7 from the field and six rebounds including four offensive boards. Mark Lyons was the only other Musketeer in double-figures with 11 points on 5-of-10 from the field. As a team, the Musketeers were 18-of-46 from the field for 39.1 percent.

Bearcat junior Yancy Gates led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-16 from the field. Dion Dixon posted 16 points for UC on 6-of-15 from the field and Cashmere Wright earned 10 points in the contest. As a team, UC hit 41.8 percent from the field, 23-of-55, and 15-of-16 from the free throw line.

Cincinnati began the second period with a dunk by Gates at the 19:44 mark and never looked back.

McLean put the Musketeers within five, 35-30, when he pulled down an offensive rebound and banked in a short shot off the glass. The Bearcats would pull away, however, using a two-minute 11-0 run over to take a 16-point, 46-30, lead.

Lyons' layup with 7:48 left to play in the contest cut the UC lead to 54-41 but it was not enough as Bearcats put the game out of reach in the final minutes.

The Bearcats led 28-20 at intermission thanks to 12 points from Gates on 6-of-7 from the field. XU was led by McLean in the first half with nine points on 3-of-3 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.

XU jumped out to an early lead and led by as much as six points in the first half but a Bearcat rally and a six minute XU scoring drought allowed the home team to take the lead.

McLean's put-back at the 13:41 mark gave XU a 10-4 lead. UC took an 11 point, 26-15, lead on a layup by Gates with just over two minutes left in the first half but a McLean basket followed by a 3-pointer by Lyons cut the Cincinnati lead to six at the end of the period.

Xavier will begin Atlantic 10 play on the road at Rhode Island Sunday, January 9. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN-U.
