CINCINNATI - The Xavier University baseball team has signed four players for the 2014 season, Ethan Schmidt, Trent Astle, Joe Gellenbeck and Jason Hall. All four future Musketeers will enroll at Xavier in the fall of 2013 and begin competition in the spring of 2014.
"We are very excited about our 2013 early signees," said head coach Scott Googins. "The staff did a great job putting this class together. We feel that all of these guys are tremendously talented and have a chance to be impact players at this level. We are extremely thrilled about adding these players to our program."
Ethan Schmidt will come to Xavier from Granville High School, where he played for Vince Ghiloni. Schmidt averaged .483 at the plate in 2012, with 10 doubles, two triples and four homeruns while leading his team to a conference Championship. The Granville, Ohio, native was named All-Central District First Team, Mid-State League Ohio First Team and Columbus Dispatch All-Metro Honorable Mention as a junior. Schmidt has also earned two varsity letters in both basketball and golf.
"Ethan is a big physical athlete who has had a very good high school career, but his best days are ahead," said Googins. "As he continues to add strength to his 6'6" frame, we expect him to make some big jumps as a corner infielder and power bat."
A native of Jeffersonville, Ind., Trent Astle has lettered all three years at Jeffersonville High School. He led Jeffersonville to conference and sectional championships as a junior. Astle was named IHSAA Coaches Association All-State Honorable Mention after posting a 7-2 record, 1.26 ERA, 86 strikeouts, 16 walks and nine complete games, including four shutouts, during the 2012 season. Astle was also named Hoosier Hills All-Conference and News and Tribune All-Area on two separate occasions.
"Trent can flat out pitch," said Googins. "He has a good fastball, two different breaking balls, and a change-up that he can really locate. He pitched at a very high level this past summer and fall. That experience will help prepare him when he gets on campus."
Joe Gellenbeck, a senior at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, comes to Xavier after earning Greater Catholic League South Co-Player of the Year and Cincinnati Enquirer Division I First Team honors in 2012. Gellenbeck recorded 29 innings on the mound and posted a 4-1 record with a 1.89 ERA and 21 strikeouts. At the plate, the native of Lebanon, Ohio, registered a .379 batting average, seven doubles and 30 RBI. Gellenbeck helped lead his club team, the Ohio Heat, to championships in the 2011 Ohio Black Swamp and 2012 C.A.B.A. World Series. He was named the Ohio Heat MVP in both 2010 and 2011.
"We wanted to get at least one left-handed hitter in this class," said Googins. "We identified Joe very early and are thrilled that he will be joining us. He is a good athlete who has shown that he can control the bat as well as drive the ball. At 6'4" he is another guy with some long levers that we can add some strength."
Jason Hall is fourth signee of the 2014 class. Hall will make baseball at Xavier a family affair as he will join his brother Adam, a sophomore pitcher at XU. Jason, a right-handed hurler, notched a 5-2 record for head coach Tim Saunders at Dublin Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio. He also went 3-0 for the Dublin Coffman Elite this summer. Hall is also a standout on the basketball court and in the classroom, earning Second Team All-Conference in basketball and Magna Cum Laude and Golden Shamrock honors for his studies.
"Jason is a talented right-handed pitcher with an even bigger upside," said Googins. "His delivery has some deception and produces an above average fastball and quality breaking ball. We are expecting big things from Jason in the years to come."
Xavier is coming off of a 28-28 season, including a 13-11 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Musketeers will open their 2013 campaign with a weekend series at the College of Charleston from Feb. 15-17.
