CINCINNATI - The Blue Team took the third game of XU baseball's annual Blue/White series, 3-2, Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the win, the Blue Team takes the 2-1 advantage in the series with the last game set to be played Saturday, Oct. 17 at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The Blue Team (2-1) got the scoring started early, putting up three runs in the first inning. Sophomore Matt Kleifges led off with a single up the middle to get on base and then stole second to get into scoring position. Thomas collected an RBI as Kleifges scored on his single. Thomas made it around to third on Lindgren's single and was able to score on a wild pitch. Lindgren moved to second on the wild pitch and was brought home on sophomore Dan Rinck's base hit to take the 3-0 lead.
The White Team (1-2) got on the board in the bottom of the second as sophomore Mark Elwell was walked and stole second. Willoughby doubled down the left line to bring home Elwell and freshman Evan Schweinfest was walked to put runners on first and second. Willoughby came home on a single from junior John McCambridge to set the score at 3-2, still in favor of Blue, which would prove to be the final score.
Sophomore Nate Mutsch got the win for the Blue Team after tossing two innings giving up two runs on four hits. Freshman Alex Vice picked up a save after facing the go ahead run in the seventh. He tossed one scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Senior Zac Richard took the loss for the White Team as he threw four innings giving up three runs on five hits.
The Blue/White series concludes on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Hayden Field with first pitch scheduled for approximately 11:30 a.m.
