Baseball Prepares for Blue/White Series
Oct. 3, 2012
CINCINNATI - The Xavier University baseball team will play a three-game intrasquad series in the next week during its fall practice season. Head coach Scott Googins and the Musketeers have been practicing for the last several weeks during the NCAA's allotted fall practice period. The team will be split into two squads, coached by assistants Danny Hayden and Brad Gschwind. The first game of the series will be played at 3 p.m. this Friday at Hayden Field on Xavier's campus. Jon Richard will get the starting nod for the white team and Vinny Nittoli will take to the mound for the blue team. Game two of the series will take place on Saturday at noon and the finale is slated for an 11 a.m. start next Thursday, with both games also being held at Hayden Field. Xavier is coming off of a 28-28 season, including a 13-11 mark in the A-10. Richard and Nittoli lead a talented pitching corps that also returns Atlantic 10 All-Rookie performer Alex Westrick. Mark Elwell is the Musketeer's top returning hitter after posting a .329 average last season. Also returning for Xavier is Patrick Paligraf (.282), Mitch Elliott (.279), Daniel Rod (.279), Selby Chidemo (.277) and Brian Bruening (.273), who ended 2012 on an eleven-game hitting streak that will extend into the 2013 campaign. Xavier lost Seth Willoughby, the Musketeers' career-leader in saves, after the relief pitcher was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Willoughby was the 138th selection of the draft. Blue Team White Team
