Aug. 3, 2009
CINCINNATI - There will be six Xavier baseball players competing in the 2009 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League playoffs this week at the Xenia Athletes in Action Sports Complex. Four Musketeers are on the Cincinnati Steam roster while the other two will be playing for the Licking County Settlers with bragging rights on the line. "It is exciting to see our guys playing well and having a great summer," commented head coach Scott Googins. "It's a great opportunity for them to develop and get better over the summer but they'll also be playing for bragging rights as the guys get ready to head back to campus." Seniors Drew Schmidt and Bobby Freking along with juniors Ben Thomas and Ryan Bellamy will be suiting up for the third-seeded Steam. Juniors John McCambridge and Tommy Shirley will be playing for the No. 4 Settlers in the rain-shortened tournament. The tournament consists of the top six teams in regular-season league play and is split into two 3-team pools or pods, with the winner of each pod playing in a single championship game. Teams are assigned pods based on seed, which is determined by the order of finish in regular-season league play. Each team is guaranteed to play three games. Teams in each pod play two teams in its pod and one team outside its pod. The team with the best composite record in each pod advances to the championship game. Two-way ties in a pod are broken by head-to-head play; three-way tides are broken in order of the following criteria:
(a) fewest runs allowed; (b) the highest seed. The higher seed will be home team throughout the tournament. Pod 1 Wednesday, August 5 Thursday, August 6 Friday, August 7 |
