Baseball to Face No. 14/20 Kansas State in NCAA Regional Hosted by Rice

CINCINNATI - The 2009 Atlantic 10 Tournament champion Xavier baseball team found out Monday it will be facing No. 14/20 Kansas State on Friday, May 29 at 3 p.m. in the NCAA Tournament Regional hosted by Rice in Houston, Texas. This is the first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Musketeers, earning the A-10's automatic bid after taking the championship title this past weekend.
Joining Xavier and Kansas State in the Regional are Sam Houston and host Rice. This is Rice's 15th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Baseball Championship, which ranks as the fourth longest active streak in the country. Kansas State (41-16-1) will take on Xavier (38-19) in the regional opener at 3 p.m. on Friday at Reckling Park while Rice (39-15) will open NCAA play against Sam Houston State (36-22) for the second consecutive year when they meet at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the Houston (Rice) Regional are on sale online at RiceOwls.com, or through the Rice Athletic Ticket Office at Rice Stadium. All-session passes are available for $55. Tickets for single games will go on sale on Thursday, May 28. Tickets can be purchased in person or over the phone by calling (713) 522-OWLS during normal business hours from Tuesday through Thursday.
Xavier is one of five teams making its first trip to the tournament. Binghamton, Cal Poly, Georgia State and Kansas State are also first-timers. Utah made the field of 64 for the first time since 1960 and Boston College made it in for the first time since 1967. With eight teams making the field the Big 12 sets a new conference record and Miami (Fla.) has made the tournament for the 37th consecutive year.
