NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Xavier senior first baseman Ben Thomas was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year in voting conducted by the league's coaches. Thomas was also named First Team All-Conference along with fellow senior, center fielder John McCambridge and sophomore Seth Willoughby. McCambridge also earned a spot on the Academic All-Conference team and freshmen, outfielder Brian Bruening and starting pitcher Vinny Nittoli, were named to the All-Rookie team.
Thomas, a three-time All-Conference selection, posted an impressive .352 average at the plate during his senior season, including 41 runs scored, 16 doubles, 14 homers and 57 RBI. The Columbus, Ohio native led the A-10 in RBI (31) and total bases (74) during Conference play, while ranking second in the league in slugging percentage (.634), RBI and home runs overall. Thomas needs just one more homer to become the all-time leader at Xavier.
McCambridge earned his first First Team All-Conference selection and second straight Academic All-Conference selection after a stellar regular season on the field and in the classroom. McCambridge currently leads the team and is sixth in the conference in batting average (.362). The Columbus, Ohio native also leads the team with 85 hits, and 55 runs scored. He also leads the team with 28 stolen bases in 2011.
Willoughby has been a key player for the Musketeers as an infielder, designated hitter, and relief pitcher this season. The Columbus, Ohio native has posted nine saves as the Musketeers' primary closer. Offensively, Willoughby posted a .316 batting average and is second on the team in home runs (5), and RBI (36).
Redshirt-freshman Vinny Nittoli earned a place on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team thanks to being one of Xavier's most reliable starting pitchers in 2011. Nittoli has the best record among XU starters (7-1), and his 3.75 ERA is second-best among XU weekend starters.
Bruening has played in 54 of Xavier's 55 games this season and has posted a .327 batting average in his rookie campaign. The Columbus, Ohio native has driven in 28 RBI and has earned seven stolen bases in 2011.
Xavier begins play at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Tournament at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J. Wednesday, at 12 p.m. For links to the A-10 Championship Central page visit Go.Xavier.com.
