CINCINNATI - Three Xavier baseball players picked up five postseason awards from the Atlantic 10, as announced on Tuesday afternoon. Seniors Jon Richard and Mark Elwell were each named second team all-conference and academic all-conference, while Daniel Rizzie was selected to the all-rookie squad.
Richard has ascended the career-records charts at Xavier and is in the midst of the best season of his career. The senior hurler leads the league and ranks 43rd nationally with eight wins and holds a personal-best 2.34 ERA. Richard is second all-time at XU in innings pitched (359) and wins (25) and fifth in strikeouts (210). Academically, Richard holds a 3.51 GPA in middle childhood education and was named to the CoSIDA 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Five First Team.
The two conference accolades for Elwell are the first of his career. The senior outfielder has registered career-highs in batting average (.337), runs (34), hits (67) and doubles (11). At one point this season, he successfully reached base in 28-consecutive games. Elwell graduated with a degree in accounting and holds a 3.33 GPA in Xavier's nationally-ranked MBA program.
Rizzie has been a regular in the Musketeers lineup this season, starting 27 games at catcher. The freshman finished the regular season batting .281 with 11 RBI and 15 runs scored. He hit his first career home run against Charlotte and had a career-high three RBIs versus Dayton. Rizzie joins current-teammates Richard, Bruening, Nittoli and Westrick as a recipient of all-rookie honors.
Xavier will play George Washington in the opening round of the A-10 Baseball Championships at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Robert and Miriam Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
