WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Xavier baseball team will have a chance to earn crucial Atlantic 10 victories this weekend as the Musketeers travel to the nation's capital to face George Washington in a three-game series beginning Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday's contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. while Sunday's series finale will be played at noon.
Xavier (25-25, 10-8 A-10) currently sits in seventh place in the conference standings and is fighting for a position in the Atlantic 10 tournament. Friday's starter, Vinny Nittoli, holds a 4-4 record and a 3.88 ERA. Juniors Jon Richard (4-5, 5.50 ERA) and Tyler Koors (2-5, 4.84 ERA) are slated to take the mound Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Junior closer Seth Willoughby has been lights-out for Xavier thus far this season. The right hander leads the A-10 in saves with 12, and is currently one save shy of tying the XU single-season record. He has a stellar 1.16 ERA in 31 innings of action.
Junior center fielder Mark Elwell leads the team with a .318 batting average and leads the conference with 15 sacrifice bunts. He is currently tied with freshman Derek Hasenbeck and sophomore Brian Bruening with 22 RBI on the year.
The Musketeers are coming off of a 9-4 win over Ohio Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Field.
George Washington (18-30, 4-14 A-10) is led offensively by Stephen Oswald with a .305 average and 30 RBI.
Justin Albright is slated to take the mound for the Colonials Friday. The right hander is 3-0 with a 3.55 ERA on the season. Right handers Craig LeJeune and Aaron Weisberg will take the hill Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The Colonials are coming off of a three-game series at Saint Joseph's in which they lost two of three games.
