CINCINNATI - Xavier (24-21) and Cincinnati (18-29) are scheduled to meet for a two-game midweek series this week. Game one will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Xavier's Hayden Field and the Musketeers will travel to UC's Marge Schott Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
Xavier dropped two of three at Saint Joseph's over the weekend, losing games one and three, but winning Saturday's game. XU fell 2-1 to open the series, but rebounded with a 6-4 victory on Saturday. St. Joe's then closed the series with a 2-0 shutout.
Last Meeting - Cincinnati
Xavier and Cincinnati met earlier this season in the Joe Nuxhall Classic held at Marge Schott Stadium on UC's campus. XU jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning, but was hampered by defensive miscues before falling, 7-6.
The Power of Hayden Field
Through 16 games on Xavier's Hayden Field, the Musketeers have connected on nine home runs. The nine homers matches XU's total from all games in 2012. Eight different Musketeers have hit a homer, led by two from Vinny Nittoli.
Nittoli Goes Yard Last Weekend...Twice
Vinny Nittoli connected for home runs in consecutive games at St. Joe's last weekend. Xavier's starting left-fielder hit a solo homer to left field in the sixth inning of XU's game on Friday and followed with another solo shot in the eighth inning on Saturday. Nittoli now leads the team with four home runs on the season, surpassing Derek Hasenbeck's three homers.
Downhill Sledding For Pitchers
Xavier's pitching staff has been on a roll in the last ten contests, sporting a combined 2.93 ERA. Jacob Bodner leads the pack with a 1-0 record in five appearances and has not allowed a run in 8.1 innings pitched. Scott Klever is 1-0 in his two starts with a 1.15 ERA and 10 Ks. Jon Richard is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA. XU's Sunday starter Tyler Koors has started three games in the span and holds a 2.54 ERA with 15 strikeouts and five walks.
