Musketeer Baseball Splits Pair With Duquesne
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Xavier and Duquesne split an Atlantic 10 doubleheader on Friday as the Musketeers won the opener 9-4 before falling in the second game 4-3. XU is now 20-22-2 overall and 10-7 in the Atlantic 10 while DU is 22-23 overall and 13-7 in the conference. In game one, XU tallied two runs each in the second and third innings off A-10 Co-Pitcher of the Week Bob Reifschneider to take a 4-0 adavantage after three innings. Xavier would use a solo home run by Eric Armstrong and a two run shot from Brett Smith to offset solo runs by the Dukes in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead into the seventh inning. XU then added another two runs in the seventh on sacrifice flies by Kevin McKnight and Jason Morelli for a 9-2 advantage entering the Dukes final at bat. In the bottom of the seventh, senior starter Adam Jahnsen gave way to classmate Jarret Sues who gave up a walk before retiring the next two batters. DU's Pete Maropis then lifted a home run to left centerfield to cut the lead to 9-4, but Sues stopped the comeback there as he retired the next batter with a line out to right field. Jahnsen earned the win for XU after allowing two runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings while striking out four and walking two. His main run support came from Smith who finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. In game two, senior Greg Wiggers was the loser in a one run game for the second straight week. He allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out seven and walking just one in a complete game performance, but it was not enough as the Dukes plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win. The win also spoiled a 3-for-3 performance by McKnight which included a second-inning RBI single. Schreen was also 2-for-4 in the game for XU. Xavier and Duquesne will conclude their three game set in Pittsburgh on Saturday at noon.
