CINCINNATI - A complete-game shutout last weekend has earned Xavier's Jon Richard a nod as the Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week. This is the second time in Richard's career in which he was given the conference's weekly award.
Richard went the distance on Friday in Xavier's 2-0 shutout win over Rhode Island, which entered the contest just one game ahead of XU in the conference standings. The junior southpaw allowed a mere three hits and two walks over his nine innings of work.
The win was Richard's seventh of the season, improving his record to 7-2. He has now won four-straight starts and hasn't lost a game since March 15 at No. 4 Louisville.
A native of Versailles, Ohio, Richard has etched his name in Xavier's record books this season. He sits in third all-time with 338 innings pitched, just six innings away from second place. Richard also ranks sixth with 198 career strikeouts.
Xavier's Friday starter also won the award in the opening weekend of the 2012 season after leading Xavier to a 10-4 win over No. 4 North Carolina.
The Musketeers have the week off for finals, but return to the diamond for a weekend series in Philadelphia against Saint Joseph's. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
