In the Last Week...
Xavier went 5-0 in the last week, sweeping Evansville on the road, defeating Wright State at home and winning at Akron. The Musketeers have had a balanced attack offensively. Daniel Rod provided a three-run home run to help XU beat Evansville. Stephen Schoettmer hit a two-run homer and Vinny Nittoli smacked a grand slam to lead Xavier past Wright State. Four RBIs from Selby Chidemo provided the offensive spark at Akron.
Last Meeting - Charlotte
Xavier took 2-of-3 from Charlotte when the two teams met last season at Hayden Field, winning the first two games by final scores of 12-6 and 5-4. The Niners claimed the final game, 6-5.
A Battle of Strengths
When Xavier and Charlotte take the field for a three-game series this weekend, the two teams will be pitting strengths against one another. Charlotte holds the best team ERA in the A-10 at 3.23, but Xavier ranks in the top three of nearly every offensive category. XU tops the A-10 in batting average (.314), slugging (.414) and hits (395).
The Power of Hayden Field
In just eight games at Xavier's home ball park, Hayden Field, the Musketeers are hitting the laces off of the ball. As a team, XU is batting .384 with a slugging percentage of .537 and OBP of .453. Xavier is averaging 9.9 rpg at Hayden, while hitting six home runs, 23 doubles and three triples.
In the Atlantic 10 preseason coaches' poll, Xavier was predicted to finish seventh. XU finished the 2012 season in seventh place. Saint Louis was predicted to win the conference with Rhode Island, VCU, Dayton, Richmond and St. Joseph's picked ahead of X.
XU Continues Winning Ways in A-10
Xavier finished 2012 with a 13-11 mark in the Atlantic 10, its sixth-straight campaign with a record over .500 during conference action. This six-season stretch is the program's best run since at least the early 1980s. This season XU has swept both St. Bonaventure and Dayton and sits second at 7-2 in the A-10.
