Errors Prove Costly in Xavier Loss
CINCINNATI – Xavier University could not withstand a quick start by Cincinnati as the Musketeers fell 10-5 in non-conference action at Hayden Field on Wednesday afternoon.
XU recorded 13 hits on the day compared to 12 hits by UC but it was three costly errors that allowed the Bearcats to continue innings and produce key runs.
Cincinnati jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after three innings of play. The Bearcats received three runs in the first off three hits including a two-run homerun and followed up with two more runs in the third.
Xavier finally scored in the bottom of the fifth as Jay Johnson sent a shot over the left center wall for his fifth homerun of the season and cut the UC lead to 6-1.
The Musketeers pushed two runs across in the home half of the seventh and eighth but a four-run eighth for the Bearcats put all hopes of XU’s third straight comeback to rest.
Johnson and Dan Hayden each tallied three hits on the afternoon as the senior Johnson registered a double and single to go along with his homerun and one RBI. Hayden recorded two singles and a double and also had an RBI. Sean Brewer went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with one RBI.
Xavier now stands at 13-21, while Cincinnati improves to 13-16. The Musketeers will have the rest of the week off before taking to the road for its final away Atlantic 10 series at Duquesne. Both Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single nine-inning game are slated for a 12:00 p.m. start time.
