Xavier Splits Chilly Doubleheader At St. Bonaventure
OLEAN, N.Y. - Xavier split a doubleheader against homestanding St. Bonaventure on Sunday in a series which was pushed back a day due to snow. The Bonnies won the opener 10-2 and the Musketeers took the nightcap 9-2.
XU, which had its five-game winning streak snapped in the opener, is now 16-13 overall and 6-1 in the A-10. SBU is 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the A-10.
The Xavier offense took nearly six innings to thaw out, but a seven inning home run by Brett Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Country Day School) in the opener proved to wake up the XU offense, but its was not enough to answer the four run fifth and six run sixth by the Bonnies.
In the second game, the Musketeers got on the board early with two in the first and three in the third before allowing a single SBU run in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-1.
Xavier would put up another two runs each in the fourth and the seventh to cement their lead and give starter Jarret Sues (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South H.S.) all the support he would need to pick up his second complete game win of the season and improve his record to 5-2 on the mound.
The two through five spots in the order each gave XU multiple base hits as Jay Johnson (Crestview Hills, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.), Alec Moss (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.), Mark Andres (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove H.S.), Smith and Eric Armstrong (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Snider H.S.) each had two hits a piece.
Xavier and St. Bonaventure will conclude their series with a single game tomorrow at 10 a.m.
