CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team will be heading to Columbus, Ohio, this afternoon to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in a non-conference midweek contest at Bill Davis Stadium at 2:05 p.m. XU will follow that up with a game at home versus Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday at Hayden Field with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
Xavier (13-8, 4-2 A-10) went 1-2 with Rhode Island this past weekend in its second consecutive home Atlantic 10 series. The Musketeers avoided the sweep with a 6-1 win on Sunday as freshman Josh Deeg put in a career day on the mound, throwing a career-high 6.1 innings and fanned a career-high nine batters. XU has nine non-conference wins so far this season, already surpassing last year's non-conference win total by three (6).
Ohio State (20-4, 2-1 Big Ten) is off to its second best start in school history to this point in the season. The Buckeyes are currently ranked 18 by Collegiate Baseball and 24 in the latest NCBWA poll and are coming off a 2-1 series at Penn State this past weekend. OSU defeated No. 2 Miami (Fla.), 7-1, last Tuesday in Miami as three Buckeye pitchers combined for a one-hitter.
Miami (12-10, 3-3 MAC) is currently enjoying a four-game winning streak after sweeping its MAC series at Eastern Michigan this past weekend and picking up a 16-5 win at Dayton on March 25. The RedHawks have outscored their opponents 50-13 over the last four games. This is the first of two games to be played between the two this season. Miami holds a 79-37-2 advantage in the all-time series, and swept the season series in 2008. The RedHawks are 3-1-1 in their last five appearances at Hayden Field in Cincinnati.
