CINCINNATI - The Xavier University baseball team will continue its string of tough non-conference games when it travels to Lexington, Ky., for a midweek meeting with No. 27 Kentucky at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but has been pushed back by the two teams.
Xavier (12-10) has played a strong schedule this year. XU faced Ohio State last week before traveling to Illinois for a four-games series. The Musketeers have already played a three game series against No. 14/12 North Carolina and a midweek game at No. 17 Indiana.
Derek Hasenbeck has been on fire at the plate for Xavier. The junior designated hitter/catcher went 12-for-28 at the plate in XU's six games last week, including four multi-hit games. Hasenbeck is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak and is batting .340 with 14 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He was awarded a spot on this week's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his efforts.
Trent Astle (1-1) will get the start for Xavier. Astle has posted a 3.38 ERA in six appearances. The freshman picked up the decision in Xavier's 6-5 win at Miami (Ohio) and took the loss against Ohio State last week.
Kentucky enters the game at 17-7 overall and 3-3 in the SEC. The Wildcats took two-of-three games against top-ranked South Carolina last weekend. Michael Thomas is batting .416 with 21 runs scored and 28 RBIs, while A.J. Reed has a team-high 32 RBIs to go along with a .378 batting average and 29 runs scored.
