CINCINNATI - Xavier gave up two big innings to Toledo Friday night and lost its home opener to the Rockets, 3-0. Xavier fell to 8-6 overall on the year, while Toledo boosts its record to 6-8.
A lead-off single in the top of the third for Toledo started a small rally of hits for the Rockets and it eventually brought Zack Michael home to score the game's first run. The next inning, Tyler Baar was hit by a Scott Klever pitch and took first to start the inning. He came around to score when Tyler Grogg grounded into a double play and the Musketeers surrendered the run. Michael was the next batter and singled up the middle to score James Miglin and gave the Rockets a three-run lead, 3-0.
XU could not get the bats going to catch up to Toledo and failed to claim its first home game of the year.
Klever (2-2) gets tagged for the loss after going seven innings and giving up three earned runs. The righty gave up seven hits and two walks. Eric Stiene made a spotless relief appearance, giving up one hit and no runs over two innings.
Grogg finished with two hits, an RBI and a walk for the Rockets. Miglin and Michael both had multi-hit games, going 2-for-4 each.
Ryan Wilkinson picked up the win for Toledo after an eight-inning, four-hit performance to keep Xavier off the board. Adam Tyson picked up the save for the Rockets.
