Hitting The "Mark"
Mark Elwell's team-leading batting average (.423) ranks 35th in the country and fourth in the A-10. This is the best average of Elwell's career, topping last season's .329 batting average. The senior also sits 54th in the country in on-base percentage (.558) and 158th in slugging (.558). Elwell has also reached base safely in all 14 games this season, running his streak to 17-straight games after including the final three of 2012.
Richard A Workhorse
Jon Richard has thrown 25.0 IP through four games this season, giving him 288.0 for his career. The lefty ranks sixth all-time at XU after passing Bill Konecny's 275.2 IP from 2004-07. His sights are now set on Jeff Barger's (1998-01) 293.0 IP. Richard has a career-best 3.60 ERA so far this season, topping his career-best 3.76 ERA in 2011.
Wild Wild West-"rick"
Sophomore Alex Westrick has been the long arm of the mound in the first quarter of the 2013 season. The lefty made his first start of the season at Middle Tennessee, striking out eight batters with no walks in six innings of shutout baseball. The Blue Raiders failed to advance a runner past first base against Westrick, who sports a 1-2 record with a 2.33 ERA.
It's a "Bru"-Ha-Ha
First baseman/outfielder Brian Bruening closed out the 2012 season on a 12-game hitting streak, the longest of the season for Xavier, and hit safely in XU's first nine games this season to push the hitting streak to 21-straight games. Bruening's streak finally came to a hault at No. 7. The junior is hitting .356 with nine RBIs and 12 runs scored. His batting average is the best of his career, eclipsing the .327 average he registered as a freshman.
Vice Makes Appearance(s) Felt
Redshirt senior Alex Vice made 31 appearances on the mound in 2012. The right-handed reliever ranks third in XU's single-season appearance totals, one behind the record of 32 set by teammate Markus Kuykendoll (2011) and Mike Deely (1976). Vice has made five appearances so far this season, picking up two saves and holding a 1.59 ERA.
Behind a masterful pitching performace from Scott Klever, Xavier defeated Bryant, 1-0, at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon. Alex Vice relieved Klever and pitched the final 1.2 innings to register his second save. XU scored the lone run of the game in the third inning. Brian Bruening doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball on Derek Hasenbeck's walk. Vinny Nittoli connected on an infield single to score Bruening.
Klever Puts Bulldogs On A Leash
In his longest outing of the season, Scott Klever threw 7.1 innings of shut out ball against Bryant on Tuesday. The Bulldogs threatened just twice, in the fourth and sixth innings, but Klever worked out of the jam both times. He finished the game after allowing four hits and four walks, while striking out three batters. The righty improved to 2-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.77.
