March 10, 2014
CINCINNATI - Xavier sophomore catcher Daniel Rizzie is a nominee for the 2014 Johnny Bench Award and is on the official watch list for the award. Rizzie is one of 72 catchers in the NCAA to be nominated for the award. The sophomore is the only BIG EAST catcher to be nominated.
Rizzie is hitting for a .292 batting average this year with eight RBIs and tied for a team-high two home runs. He was named BIG EAST Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on March 4 after hitting for a .500 weekend batting average, which included a 4-for-6 performance at the plate with four runs, four RBIs and two home runs against Dayton on March 1. Last year, the Orland Park, Ill., native started in 28 games. He hit for a .298 average during conference play as a freshman and earned a spot on the 2013 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.
The Johnny Bench Award is awarded to the top collegiate catcher at the Division I level. Johnny Bench is remembered for both his offense and being a pioneer for all present-day catchers. Bench was the first catcher to wear a protective helmet while in the field and popularized catching one-handed. The Hall of Fame member won National League MVP honors in 1970 and 1972 and won 10 Gold Gloves. Last June, Ole Miss catcher, Stuart Turner won the award.
Rizzie and the Musketeers are in action this week for a home-and-home series against Miami (Ohio). They travel to Miami for a 6:00 p.m., start on Tuesday, followed by the Musketeers' home opener on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
