CINCINNATI - The Xavier Musketeers (5-3 overall) head into Bloomington, Ind., to take on Indiana (4-5) in the Hoosiers' home opener Wednesday at 4:05 p.m. Two days later, the Musketeers travel to Georgia State (6-5) for a three-game series against the Panthers. Friday's action is set to start at 6:00 p.m., followed by Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Indiana hosts its first home game of the 2014 season after going 2-3 on the road and 2-2 at neutral sites this year. The Hoosiers defeated Toledo, 8-3, and No. 9 Louisville, 6-2, in a doubleheader last Saturday. Kyle Schwarber, Big Ten Player of the Week, leads IU in offense with team-highs in batting average (.342), runs (nine) and triples (two).
Righty Eric Stiene (0-0) will make his first career start for the Musketeers against the Hoosiers. The redshirt sophomore has appeared in two games on the year, giving up just three hits over six innings.
Georgia State comes into the week 6-5 overall and plays at Kennesaw State Tuesday night. The Panthers dropped two of three games against Northern Kentucky this past weekend. Chris Triplett leads Georgia State at the plate with a .409 batting average, 18 hits and 13 RBIs. Matt Rose (1-0) has started in three games this year and carries a 3.50 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 18 innings pitched.
It was a tale of two games this past weekend for XU baseball in the 2014 Riverview Inn Classic. After dropping a 15-5 decision to Bradley Friday, the Musketeers bounced back on Saturday to earn a commanding victory over Dayton, 16-1. Xavier had its Sunday game against Austin Peay cancelled due to inclement weather.
Daniel Rizzie, named the BIG EAST Player of the Week by College Sports Madness this week, recorded four hits, including a pair of home runs and a double, four RBIs and four runs Saturday. Vinny Nittoli, the BIG EAST Player of the Week, hit for a .714 average this past weekend, which included two homers in back-to-back games. Nittoli carries a team-high .360 average with seven RBIs on the season. Scott Klever (1-1) pitched seven innings, giving up just one run to pick up his first win of the year on Saturday and earned on a spot on this week's BIG EAST Honor Roll.
