Baseball Musketeers Head To Cougar Classic This Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C.-- The Xavier baseball team will be looking of three big wins this weekend as the Musketeers face Connecticut, Rhode Island, and the College of Charleston at the Cougar Classic this weekend at Patriot's Point in Charleston, S.C. XU faces UConn Friday at 1 p.m., URI Saturday at 1 p.m., and CofC Sunday at 3 p.m. Xavier (1-2) posted their biggest win of the season with a 10-4 win over the No. 4 North Carolina in the second game of Friday's season-opening double-header. Junior lefty Jon Richard earned an Atlantic 10 Conference Pitcher of the Week nod after earning the win over UNC in 5.1 innings of action. Freshman catcher Derek Hasenbeck was named A-10 Rookie of the Week after went 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead Xavier to its 10-4 victory over No. 3 North Carolina in his first start as a Musketeer on Feb. 17. He went 2-for-4 in a hard-fought loss to the Tar Heels on Feb. 18. He closed out opening weekend with a .714 average at the plate (5-of-7), including a pair of doubles and five RBI. He was also named a Primetime Performer by CollegeBaseball360.com on Feb. 21. Friday's opponent, UConn, went 1-2 in the BIG EAST/ Big Ten Challenge, defeating Indiana 8-0 and falling to Purdue 9-4 and Ohio State 9-5 last weekend. Saturday's foe, Rhode Island, went 1-2 in the opening weekend to William and Mary. Senior Anthony Pisani picked up the lone win as he pitched five inning giving up two earned runs while fanning four batters. Host school and Sunday's opponent, College of Charleston, are ranked 29th in the Collegiate Baseball poll after starting 3-0 against South Alabama. Cougar pitchers allowed only five runs in 25.0 innings pitched last weekend and struck out 23 batters. Christian Powell threw 6.0 innings of shutout baseball allowing only two hits and struck out four.
