CINCINNATI - Xavier redshirt freshman Andre Jernigan went 6-for-11 this weekend and was named BIG EAST Player of the Week in the first installment of the award. Jernigan was joined by redshirt sophomore Adam Hall who earned spot on the BIG EAST five-member weekly honor roll. Capping off a fantastic week for Xavier baseball, Jernigan and Hall helped Xavier start the season 3-0 in South Carolina.
Jernigan, playing shortstop for the Musketeers, finished the weekend with a .545 batting average, including five runs and two RBIs. In the win against Toledo, Jernigan went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. The redshirt freshman was a big piece in the win against Norfolk State in extra innings. Jernigan led off the bottom of the 13th inning with a single up the middle and eventually scored from third on a Vinny Nittoli walk with the bases loaded. Closing out the weekend, Jernigan went 2-for-2 against Furman and scored twice in the 11-6 win.
Hall was the winning pitcher in the first game against Toledo. The righty pitcher allowed only one earned run while giving up just two hits and striking out four in six strong innings for XU.
The perfect weekend marks the best start for Xavier baseball since 1985. The Musketeers are back in action this weekend as they take on nationally-ranked North Carolina Friday at 3:00 p.m.
