CINCINNATI - After Winter Storm Pax delayed the opening game of the year, Xavier baseball will open the 2014 season with a doubleheader against Toledo and Norfolk St. on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Musketeers battle Toledo at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., with first pitch slated for 12:30 p.m., and then Xavier will face Norfolk State at 4 p.m. The Musketeers wrap up the four-team round-robin event on Sunday against Furman at the Paladin's home field. Sunday's game is set to begin at 11 a.m.
Saturday's games for the Musketeers will be held at Fluor Field, home of the Boston Red Sox single-A affiliate Greenville Drive. The field features its own 30-foot "green monster" wall in left field, similar to the wall at Fenway Park in Boston.
Xavier went 32-26 last season, including 16-8 in the Atlantic 10. The team's league record was good for a fourth-place finish, but XU was just one game out of tying Saint Louis, Charlotte and Rhode Island at 17-7. The Musketeers went on to win their first two games of the A-10 Championship, before dropping their next two games for a third-place finish in the league tourney.
Twenty-six letterwinners return from last year's team, including conference and College Sports Madness preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Joe Forney, 2013 A-10 all-tourney award winner Vinny Nittoli and 2013 A-10 All-Rookie selection Daniel Rizzie.
