CINCINNATI - First pitch of the 2013 college baseball season is this Friday and the Xavier Musketeers are prepped to open their season with a three-game series at the College of Charleston. As the start of the season rapidly approaches, XU's outfield is taking shape.
Incumbent centerfielder Mark Elwell returns for his senior campaign after leading the Musketeers in the field and at the plate in 2012. The Granville, Ohio, native staked claim to the starting job in centerfield several years ago and will lead a talented corps of outfielders this season.
Two of Xavier's outfielders from the 2012 squad, redshirt junior Mitch Elliott and senior Daniel Rod, are rehabbing injuries, and the competition to fill outfield has been hot. Sophomores Joe Forney and Jacob Bodner can play either left or right. Pat Jones, when healthy, and Tres Eberhardt are competing for time in leftfield.
Elwell is the leader of the outfield and will lead the team again in 2013. He hit .329 with 29 RBIs and 22 runs scored, while swiping 11 bases on the season. The centerfielder has a perfect career fielding percentage while successfully converting 288 putouts and six assists during his career.
The Musketeers have a stable of players that will see time as the designated hitter. Redshirt junior Vinny Nittoli will see time at DH when he isn't on the mound as a starting pitcher. Redshirt sophomore Bo Slemons, senior Seth Dawes, Jones and Przeniczny will also serve at DH during the season.
