CAMDEN, N.J. - With an 18-7 loss to top-ranked Charlotte, the Xavier baseball team was eliminated from the 2010 Atlantic 10 Tournament at Campbell's Field. The Musketeers finished the season with a 26-32 overall mark and 18-9 league record.
For the Musketeers, seniors Freking and Zac Richard each tallied three hits in the contest while two other Musketeers had two hits in the game, including redshirt senior Neil Lindgren who was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Charlotte (39-16) struck first with a four-spot in the first inning on the strength of six hits. The Niners opened the game with three consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly, a triple and another single scored the next three runs for Charlotte to put the 49ers up, 4-0.
Xavier got a run back in the top of the second as Freking led off with a double to left and Zac Richard followed with a single to left, bringing home Freking. Lindgren reached on a fielder's choice but the next two batters were put out to end the inning with Charlotte leading 4-1.
The Niners scored four more in the bottom of the fourth, using three singles, a sac bunt and took advantage of a Xavier throwing error to take the seven-run lead, 8-1.
After Charlotte notch a single run in the bottom of the fifth, Xavier got the bats swinging in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Zac Richard singled in junior Phil Bauer and Lindgren's two-RBI double brought home redshirt sophomore Dan Rinck and Freking. Richard was plated by redshirt sophomore Matt Kleifges' single to right field. To round out the inning, freshman Patrick Paligraf tallied an RBI on a sacrifice fly out that enable Lindgren to come home. The Musketeers cut into the Niners' lead, 9-6.
The Niners exploded for nine runs in the sixth, effectively putting the game out of reach for the Musketeers. Freking sent a solo shot to left field in the seventh which would prove to be the final run of the game as Charlotte took the contest, 18-7.
