BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Junior pitcher Sean Campbell was masterful on the mound and Xavier used a big seventh inning to propel itself to the title game of the BIG EAST Baseball Championship presented by New York Life with a 5-3 win over Seton Hall.
Xavier (28-27) will meet the top-seeded Creighton Bluejays in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The contest will be televised nationally on FOX Sports 1.
Campbell entered in the fifth and worked the final 4.2 innings for the victory, improving to 2-1 on the year. He limited the Pirates to one hit and a walk, while fanning five batters.
Seton Hall's starter Anthony Pacillo held Xavier without a hit for the first five innings, but the Musketeers made the most of their chances in the sixth and seventh innings to pull the come-from-behind victory.
A lead-off single by Derek Jenkins resulted in a run for Seton Hall (39-15) in the opening frame. Jenkins crossed the plate on Sal Annunziata's groundout. The Hall broke through with two more runs on Zack Weigel's triple in the fifth to extend its lead to 3-0.
Xavier starter Eric Stiene gave way to Campbell after 4.1 innings. Stiene pitched well, allowing just three runs on five hits. Only two of the runs were earned.
Pacillo's no-hitter was finally broken up when Andre Jernigan and Stephen Schoettmer connected on consecutive infield singles in the sixth. Jernigan eventually scored when Jenkins let lose with an errant throw from centerfield on Mitch Elliott's fly out.
Trailing, 3-1, entering the 7th, Xavier put together a four-run inning to grab the lead. It started with Patrick Jones' one-out walk, which was followed by Derek Hasenbeck's single. Pacillo hit Brian Bruening to load the bags for Jernigan.
Pacillo gave way to Ryan Testani, who hit Jernigan with a 1-0 pitch to deliver the first run of the frame. XU then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Schoettmer. Jernigan, who was on his horse, beat the throw to second base and kept the bags juiced for the Musketeers.
Bo Slemons pushed across the game-winning run with an RBI sacrifice fly. Elliott then ripped a single to score Jernigan and provide Xavier with a two-run cushion, 5-3.
Campbell continued his dominance on the mound and used some terrific defense to close out Seton Hall, sending Xavier to the title game in its first season in the BIG EAST.
Jernigan led the Musketeers with one run on two hits, but he also reached safely on a walk and hit-by-pitch. The freshman shortstop scored two runs and drove in one.
Schoettmer, Slemons and Elliott registered the other three RBIs for XU, and Jones, Hasenbeck and Bruening tallied a run each.
