CINCINNATI -- Xavier suffered a 5-1 loss at the hands of Atlantic 10 foe Saint Jospeh's Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the loss, XU fell to 27-28 on the season and 12-11 in the A-10 while the Hawks improved to 23-29 on the season with a 13-9 A-10 mark.
Freshman Adam Hall was pegged with the loss in 1.1 innings of action. Starter Jon Richard went six innings with four hits and one unearned run while Alex Vice pitched 1.2 innings to close out the game.
Elwell was hit by a pitch with two outs in the sixth and moved to third on a double to left field by Bruening. The XU center fielder crossed the plate when freshman Derek Hasenbeck reached on an error by the Saint Joseph's shortstop to tie the game at 1-1.
Unfortunately for Xavier, the Hawks rallied with three runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth to add some insurance while starting pitcher Kyle Mullen went the distance and earned a complete game win to improve to 6-4 on the year.
The Musketeers and Hawks will meet in the rubber game of the three-game series Saturday at 12 p.m. at Hayden Field. Saturday's game will be senior day and XU's lone senior Nathan Mutsch will be honored prior to the game. The game will also be video streamed live at GoXavier.com.
