May 17, 2012
CINCINNATI -- Sophomore second baseman Selby Chidemo's two-RBI single in the eighth inning spurred Xavier to a 7-3 win over Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's Thursday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 27-27 and 12-10 in the Atlantic 10 while the Hawks fell to 22-29 overall and 12-9 in the conference. Freshman lefty Alex Westrick improved to 3-2 as he earned the win in 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Starter Vinny Nittoli went 5-1 innings in the no decision. Right fielder Mitch Elliott led off the top of the eighth with a walk and moved to second on a bunt single by third baseman Tres Eberhardt. Both runners advanced on an error by the SJU pitcher, which set up the go-ahead single by Chidemo. Chidemo hit a 3-2 pitch through the left side, scoring Eberhardt and Elliott. The XU second baseman moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Patrick Paligraf and came home on an RBI base hit by junior center fielder Mark Elwell. A RBI single by Bruening allowed Elwell to cross the plate and gave XU the 7-3 lead. Xavier fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first but solid hitting allowed the Musketeers to score a run in the bottom of the fifth, sixth, and seventh. Seth Willoughby returned to the lineup for the first time since the third game of the season and posted a RBI single in the seventh that tied the game at 3-3. Chidemo finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Elwell had a big day offensively as well with two hits in four at bats with two runs and two RBI.
The Musketeers will continue the series with Saint Joseph's Friday at 3 p.m. at Hayden Field. Gametracker and live audio is available at GoXavier.com. |
