CINCINNATI -- Sophomore Seth Willoughby went 4-for-5 at the plate as Xavier defeated Atlantic 10 foe George Washington 9-5 Saturday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the victory, the Musketeers improved to 27-23 overall and 12-8 in the A-10.
Offensively, the Musketeers saw contributions from several players. Willoughby led the way with four RBI while senior Ben Thomas went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI.
XU starting pitcher Tyler Koors improved to 5-4 with the win in five innings of play. He struck out two Colonial batters in the win. Nathan Mutsch added three innings of relief and Markus Kuykendoll closed out the game.
Xavier jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as McCambridge scored on a single by Thomas. Willoughby followed two at-bats later with a two-run home run, his fifth of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Musketeers added three more runs to extend their lead to 6-2. Thomas singled to drive in Patrick Paligraf. Willoughby struck again later in the inning with a RBI single that scored Thomas. Senior Phil Bauer scored the final out of the inning on an error by the GW pitcher.
Thomas drove in another RBI with a double in the bottom of the sixth and another single by Willoughby brought home Bauer and extended the XU lead to 9-3.
The Musketeers close out the series against GW Sunday at 12 p.m. Eight Xavier seniors will be honored prior to the game as part of the annual senior day ceremony. Sunday's game is also part of this season's Alumni Celebration day at the ballpark.
