ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Xavier baseball team couldn't overcome an early deficit as the Musketeers fell to George Washington 5-3 in the final road conference game of the season. With the loss, Xavier fell to 26-27 overall and 11-10 in the Atlantic 10.
The Colonials jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on four hits. GW added a run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
Mitch Elliott knocked a one-out single and moved to second on a hit by Brian Bruening. Vinny Nittoli's bases-loaded pinch hit walk brought Elliott home and cut into the GW lead. Mark Elwell scored Bruening on a RBI fielder's choice to cut the GW lead to 4-3.
However, the GW pitching staff held on while the Colonials added a run in the seventh to seal the win.
