ARLINGTON, Va. -- Xavier used a six-run first inning to cruise to an 11-4 win over Atlantic 10 rival George Washington Saturday afternoon. With the win, Xavier improved to an even 26-26 on the year and 11-9 in the A-10 while GW fell to 19-31 overall and 5-15 in the conference.
Xavier jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman Derek Hasenbeck drove in the first run of the game with a double down the left field line that brought home Patrick Paligraf, who walked to lead off the game. Sophomore Tres Eberhardt knocked a RBI single that plated Selby Chidemo, and Brian Bruening walked with the bases loaded to score Hasenbeck to give XU a 3-0 lead before the first out.
Mitch Elliott's two-out double started a rally in the top of the fourth inning. Bruening brought Elliott home with a RBI base hit, then stole second. Mark Elwell capped the rally with a two-RBI double that gave XU a 10-4 lead.
Bruening had a big day offensively going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs and two RBI. Saturday's contest was Bruening's sixth multiple-RBI game of the season.
Elwell finished the game with two hits in four at bats and two RBI of his own. Elwell's two hits gave the XU junior his 17th multi-hit game.
