SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Despite holding leads in both games of a Saturday doubleheader at Seton Hall, Xavier dropped both decisions. Game one was lengthened by three rain delays and then went to extra innings before concluding in a 3-2 loss in the 12th inning. The Musketeers then fell, 7-3, in the second meeting.
Xavier dropped to 24-24 overall and 7-8 in the BIG EAST, while Seton Hall improved its record to 36-11 and 10-5 in league play.
The Musketeers will travel to Bowling Green for a Tuesday afternoon contest against the Falcons. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. XU will then wrap up its regular season with three games at home against Creighton.
Miscues by the Musketeers on defense led to a pair of unearned runs for the Pirates, ultimately ending in a 3-2 loss in a lengthy game one of the doubleheader.
Starting pitcher Scott Klever was charged with a fielding error in the first inning on a sac bunt attempt, which eventually allowed the first run of the game to score for Seton Hall.
Neither team was able to put a rally together until Xavier finally broke through in the eighth inning. Stephen Schoettmer walked and Brian Bruening doubled to put runners on second and third. Daniel Rizzie delivered a two-out RBI single to push the Musketeers on top, 2-1.
The Pirates' Sal Annunziata drove in his second run of the game with two outs in the ninth off of the Musketeers' closer Brad Kirschner to send the game into extra innings.
XU put runners in scoring position in both the 10th and 12th frames, but was unable to score the winning run.
D.J. Ruhlman singled and stole second in the bottom of the 12th to give SHU a runner in scoring position with two down. Ruhlman then scored the winning run on Chris Selden's infield single and subsequent throwing error by Schoettmer at third.
Rizzie registered both of Xavier's RBIs in a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Bruening and Joe Forney added two hits apiece.
Klever worked seven innings, allowing just the one unearned run in the first frame. Sean Campbell and Markus Kuykendoll each pitched effectively in relief. Eric Stiene allowed two hits and was charged with the loss to fall to 3-2 overall.
Three rain delays and three extra innings resulted in a game that lasted two minutes shy of six and a half hours.
Despite taking a 2-1 lead in the second game, Xavier couldn't hold on and fell, 7-3. Michael Moore had the Musketeers' lone RBI in the game, as the other two runs were scored on wild pitches.
Derek Jenkins started the game for Seton Hall with a single and two stolen bases to put a runner on third. Jenkins then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Grimm to spot the Pirates a 1-0 advantage in the first.
Moore blasted his second homer of the season to knot the score at one in the third, but the Musketeers weren't finished in the frame. Bruening scored from third on a wild pitch by Pirates starter Luke Cahill.
Seton Hall answered with a run in the sixth and then exploded for five runs in the seventh to grab control of the game.
Xavier starter Vinny Nittoli suffered just his third loss of the season, falling to 5-3 after giving up six runs in six innings. Sean Campbell surrendered the final run in one inning of work and Daniel Przeniczny worked a scoreless frame.
