DAYTON, Ohio -- The Musketeers picked up a crucial Atlantic 10 series win as they defeated the Flyers of the University of Dayton 5-1 in the rubber game of a three-game set. With the win, Xavier improved to 24-21 overall and 10-8 in the conference.

Redshirt-freshman Vinny Nittoli continued his streak of solid outings as he pitched 7.2 innings of two-hit, one-run baseball on his way to his seventh win of the season. The XU righty improved to 7-1 on the season and struck out five Flyers in the victory.

XU reliever Seth Willoughby moved from the designated hitter's spot to earn his ninth save of the season in 1.1 shutout innings.

Seniors first baseman Ben Thomas went 1-for-4 on the day with three RBIs. He also eclipsed last season's homerun total with his 14th blast of the season. As a team, the Musketeers went 11-for-35 at the plate.

With the loss, the Flyers fell to 26-21 on the season and 11-7 in the A-10. Starting pitcher Mike Hauschild fell to 8-5 on the season as he was pegged with the loss in eight innings of play.

Xavier jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second baseman Selby Chidemo hit a two-out single past the UD shortstop. Third baseman Patrick Paligraf brought Chidemo home on the next at bat with a RBI double down the left field line.

Redshirt-sophomore left fielder Mark Elwell scored Xavier's lone run in the top of the fifth on a RBI sacrifice fly by Thomas. The Musketeers struck again in the top of the fifth when senior shortstop Phil Bauer hit a one-out triple to left field and was brought home on a fielder's choice by Willoughby that extended the Xavier lead to 3-1.

In the top of the ninth inning Thomas blasted a two-out two-run home run to deep right field that added some insurance and extended the XU lead to 5-1.
