PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Freshman Derek Hasenbeck went 2-for-4 with a home run to lead Xavier to a 4-3 Atlantic 10 win over La Salle Sunday. With the win, Xavier improved to 24-25 overall and 10-8 in the A-10 while La Salle fell to 18-28 on the season with a 5-13 conference mark.
Junior Tyler Koors picked up his second win of the season in seven innings of action. The XU right hander struck out five La Salle batters and gave up three runs. Junior closer Seth Willoughby picked up his 12th save of the 2012 season in two innings with three strikeouts. Willoughby is just one save shy of the single season record of 13 saves set by Jordan Conley in 2009.
Hasenbeck got the Musketeers on the board in the top of the first when he blasted an 0-1 pitch over the left flied wall for a one-out two-run homer that gave XU a 2-0 lead.
Patrick Paligraf, who singled to lead off the game, got another base hit to start the Xavier third inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Selby Chidemo. The junior shortstop moved to third thanks to Hasenbeck's second hit of the game and scored his second run on a fielder's choice to sophomore third baseman Tres Eberhardt.
With the score tied at 3-3, it was Chidemo who set up the XU go-ahead run in the fifth. The sophomore led off the inning with a single and stole second. Eberhardt drove in his second run of the game with a single that brought home Chidemo and gave XU the 4-3 lead.
The one-run lead was all the Musketeers needed as Koors and Willoughby shutout the Explorers to close out the game.
The Musketeers return home for their final non-conference game of the season as they host Ohio Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Hayden Field.
