PHILADELPHIA - Tyler Koors gave Xavier (24-21, 11-7 A-10) a quality start, but the offense couldn't get rolling in a 2-0 loss to Saint Joseph's (25-21, 11-7 A-10) on Sunday. Koors (4-5) worked six innings allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits.
Tres Eberhardt picked up two of the Musketeers four hits in the game, a single in the first inning and a double in the sixth. Daniel Rizzie singled in the fifth inning and Mark Elwell singled in the eighth for the other two Xavier hits.
The game remained scoreless through the first 4.5 innings until SJU capitalized on an XU error in the home half of the fifth. Lansing Veeder doubled down the leftfield line to open the inning. After Koors induced a fly out, Quinn Renner singled to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error by Jake Forrester. Veeder scored on the error.
The Hawks tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a sac fly by Greg Kumpel. After SJU loaded the bases on two walks and hit by pitch, Kumpel lifted a ball to centerfield to plate the final run of the game and put XU down, 2-0.
Xavier had opportunities to score in the fifth and sixth frames. Joe Forney walked and stole second with one out in the fifth and advanced to third on Rizzie's single. The Musketeers failed to score the run after a fly out by Forrester and strike out by Stephen Schoettmer.
Daniel Thorpe pitched eight innings of four-hit ball to earn the win and improve to 5-6. Thorpe struck out 11 Musketeers in the win. Jimmy Yacabonis closed out the ninth inning for his ninth save.
Xavier and Cincinnati will meet in a midweek home-and-home series this week. The first game will be played at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at XU's Hayden Field and the two squads will meet at 6:30 p.m. at UC's Marge Schott Stadium on Wednesday.
