CINCINNATI -- The Xavier baseball team split Saturday's double-header against SBU with the Bonnies taking game one 2-1 while XU took game two 6-1. With the split, Xavier improved to 23-20 overall and 8-7 in the Atlantic 10
Game One Recap Xavier jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a solo homerun by senior first baseman Ben Thomas. The senior lefty blasted a deep shot to right field for his 13th homer of the season, which tied his season total from last year. However, that would be the only run of the game as SBU managed to hold off the Musketeers for eight straight innings.
SBU took the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh and never looked back as they held on for the 2-1 win.
Bonnies starter Jordan Crane earned the complete game win in game one, giving up just one earned run. Xavier starter Tyler Koors fell to 3-4 as he was pegged with the loss.
Game Two RecapXavier took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a RBI sacrifice fly to center field by sophomore third baseman Patrick Paligraf that scored freshman right fielder Brian Bruening.
The Musketeers got their first hit of the game on a single to right field by Thomas. An RBI single by sophomore second baseman Seth Willoughby followed by a RBI fielder's choice by Bruening stretched the XU lead to 3-0.
The Bonnies scored once in the top of the seventh but XU was able to pull away with a three-run homerun to left field by Willoughby that extended the Musketeer lead to 6-1.
Redshirt sophomore Vinny Nittoli improved to 6-1 with the win. The XU right hander 6.1 innings of four-hit, one-run baseball in the victory.
