CINCINNATI -- Sophomore third baseman Tres Eberhardt's most important at bat of the day did not result in a hit. Instead, the XU left hander held off of four straight pitches from Fordham reliever Jeremy Adel for a walk-off bases-loaded walk that gave XU a 4-3 win in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Hayden Field.
With the win, XU improved to 22-24 overall and 8-7 in the Atlantic 10 while Fordham fell to 19-28 on the season and 10-8 in the A-10.
Patrick Paligraf got the 10th inning rally started with a two-out single to right field. Sophomore Selby Chidemo was hit by a pitch in the next at bat and freshman catcher Derek Hasenbeck walked on four pitches to load the bases for Eberhardt. The XU sophomore held back as he watched four pitches go wide to give XU the 3-2 win.
Xavier tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth when Daniel Rod led off with a double to left field. Mark Elwell's one-out single moved Rod to third and a base hit bunt by Paligraf brought the XU left fielder home.
Junior Alex Vice improved to 5-3 with the win three innings of relief action. Vice struck out two and allowed just one hit in the outing. Junior starter Tyler Koors went seven innings and gave up five hits and three runs.
Rod led the way offensively with three hits in five at bats and one run. Brian Bruening went 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI.
The Musketeers will take the week off for finals and will return to action Friday, May 4, as they travel to face Atlantic 10 rival La Salle in the first game of a three-game series. First pitch Friday is slated for 3 p.m.
