CINCINNATI -- An eighth inning rally propelled Xavier to a 2-1 win over Atlantic 10 rival Fordham Saturday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the win, Xavier improved to 21-24 overall and 7-7 in the Atlantic 10 while Fordham fell to 19-27 overall and 10-7 in the conference. Saturday's game was delayed for three hours due to thunderstorms in the area.
Junior starting pitcher Jon Richard went eight innings and struck out five Rams in the win. Junior Seth Willoughby earned his 11th save of the season while Fordham starter Joseph Charest went eight innings in the loss.
Xavier rallied in the bottom of the eighth as Daniel Rod led off the inning with a single to the left side. Sophomore Michael Moore followed with a well-placed bunt and avoided a tag by the Rams' catcher to earn a base hit.
Sophomore Brian Bruening reached on an error by the Fordham third baseman that allowed Rod to score the tying run. Junior Mark Elwell put the Musketeers on top with a sac fly that scored Moore and gave XU the 2-1 win.
Fordham's lone run came in the top of the fifth on a sac fly by Ryan Phelan. Richard pitched out of a jam in the fifth. After three straight base hits by the Rams to start the inning, the XU lefty settled down to retire three straight with only one run allowed.
Rod led the way for XU offensively as he had two of XU's three hits in three at bats.
The Musketeers will look take the three-game series as they host Forham in the finale Sunday. First pitch from Hayden Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
