CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team outlasted the rain and then outlasted the visiting Cincinnati Bearcats Tuesday afternoon, taking a 10-9 victory at Hayden Field as senior Jordan Conley knocked in the winning runs with a two-RBI single in the eighth inning. With the win, Xavier improves to 24-16 while Cincinnati falls to 22-19 on the season.
Junior Drew Schmidt went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Musketeers, including a solo shot to right field in the first inning which was the first home run of his career. Conley and sophomore John McCambridge both had multiple-hit days as well, each tallying two hits.
The Musketeers took the early 3-0 lead over the Bearcats after Schmidt's solo shot and a two-RBI single from junior Zac Richard in the first. XU would score one more in the second on another homer, this time from senior Adam Pasono, his seventh of the year.
The Bearcats got two runs back in the third on a two-run homer from Spina and another run in the fifth when Peters scored as Satterwhite hit into a double play. After four and a half.
Xavier answered with a run in the fifth as well as Conley's single plated Schmidt to put XU up 5-3 after five complete.
After UC put up another run in the top of the sixth, XU notched three in the bottom of the frame. The Musketeers started the inning with back-to-back singles and Pasono reached first on an error as he was laying down a sacrifice bunt. The error allowed both runners to score and Schmidt's single up the middle scored sent in Pasono to give XU the 8-4 advantage.
Cincinnati wasn't going quietly as the Bearcats notched two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to take the 9-8 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. Senior Billy O'Conner led off the frame with a single to right and Schmidt took a base on balls.
Both runners were moved over on senior Neil Lindgren's sac bunt and sophomore Ben Thomas was intentionally walked for the third time on the day. Conley stepped to the plate and with an 0-2 count, he banged out a single that plated what would prove to be the winning run for the Musketeers.
In the top of the ninth, Conley moved in from short stop to close out the game on the mound, and with two putouts and a swinging strikeout he collected his sixth save of the season.
Freshman Shane Liska (2-0) took the win for the Musketeers after throwing one inning of relief. Thomas started on the mound for XU, tossing three innings and recording a career-high tying seven strikeouts.
Jensen (3-3) took the loss for the Bearcats as he was responsible for putting the winning run on base, the only batter he faced on the day.
This is the second time this season XU has bested UC as the Musketeers hold a 2-1 season advantage heading into tomorrow evening's contest at UC's Marge Schott Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
